The renaissance or re-birth was a cultural diverge that spanned from about the 14th through the seventeenth centuries. Altarpieces were unremarkably commissioned to artificers during the renaissance in Italy. both of the altarpieces I compared were in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The firs t piece I looked at was the Altarpiece Showing the Virgin and Child and Saints Appollonia & Sebastian by David Ghirlandaio, an artist from Florence, younger brother of the more famous artist Domenico Ghirlandaio. This was through with tempera paint on a wooden sheet, beforehand oil paints were available. This altarpiece shows the Virgin and Child and the two saints Appollonia and Sebastian.
